Are You A Proverbs 31 Woman? I’m not…

Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.” Proverbs 31:10 KJV

For those of us who have spent any amount of time in the church, have been taught or heard a sermon about the Proverbs 31 woman. The scripture we’ve heard referenced time and time again. Now don’t get me wrong, sis is goals. She is an early riser, she’s a hard worker, a businesswoman, wife, mother, a beautiful woman of great dignity and strength. Now tell me who wouldn’t aspire to be this woman? She lives her life with purpose. But comparing yourself to her can be discouraging and it can also be inspiring. She is a role model to most Christian women and her greatest attribute was her relationship with God. Not her social status, title, or job.

How can we relate?

When this was written it was clearly a different time. How can I as a Millennial relate? Her characteristics are attainable regardless of the period in time. A number of us are pursuing our passions, starting businesses, raising families, mentoring, and being leaders of change in our communities. While others are in a season of waiting to hear from God. A virtuous woman is a woman of influence and grace. She is a force of nature, a woman of self-respect, principle, and morals. These are all things that we should aspire to be.

Striving to be a Proverbs 31 woman

Life can be never-ending work, some days we climb to the highest mountain, and some days we barely want to get out of bed. I understand why so many preach and teach about her. Life is about perspective, you can look at your responsibilities as a burden or a blessing. But ultimately it is about fulfilling your God-given purpose. Not for our worldly gain, but for the benefit of building God’s kingdom. As women, we wear many hats but God gives us the strength and the ability to fulfill our duties. When we get to heaven, we just want God to say, “Well done thy good and faithful servant."

How I am working towards Proverbs 31 status

I am a woman with a 9-5, a wife, a daughter, aunt, friend and I assist my husband in ministry. Even as I write this we are currently managing our ministry as well as my father-in-law’s ministry. Life throws things our way every day and we have to pray, regroup and keep pressing on. How do I make sure that I am living in my purpose?

I schedule my devotion time into my calendar, I set a daily reminder to make sure I am reading my scriptures. I have my alarm set to wake up at 5:30 AM. Do I always get up at 5:30, no. But I make an effort to get up most mornings and care for myself before I take care of my household. I make sure that my husband is well-fed, healthy, and provided for physically and emotionally. I build him up with prayer, affirmations, encouragement, and love. While serving the ministry and God’s people with my gifts and talents. I juggle many responsibilities and many tasks. Do I always hit the mark? No, but I give it my all and work to the best of my ability.

If you are unsure of your purpose here is some advice. Pray, dig deep, and talk to God. Ask him to reveal his purpose for your life. Be consistent and put forth the effort.

I am not a Proverbs 31 woman yet. I am a work in progress, striving daily to fulfill my God-given mission.
