Self-care is important but is an activity that most of us don’t partake in nearly as much as we should.  It is a very simple concept, but it is often overlooked. Self-care can improve your mood and reduce anxiety.  Proper self-care can also improve your relationships with those around you.  But why is it so hard for us to implement the activities and habits that can help us function better physically, emotionally, and spiritually?

The ways that I like to implement self-care daily:

  • SLEEP: Getting 7-8 hours of rest and having a nighttime routine aids me in getting adequate rest.

  • MEAL PLANNING: Healthy eating and home-cooked meals help you get proper nutrition to help with weight loss.

  • CREATIVE TIME/OUTLET: Using your creativity can be self-care at it’s best. Also finding time to read, color, paint, crochet, sing, write, dance, etc. Find the time to do what you enjoy.

  • EXERCISE: Working out a few times a week is a necessity with PCOS. It can be a chore sometimes, but after you do it. You feel so much better. Take care of yourself.

  • SPENDING QUALITY TIME: Calling and spending time with your family and friends a few times a month can also be self-care. I’m an introvert so text and facetime are my favorite ways to socialize.

  • STRESS REDUCTION: I know that this can be hard sometimes, but stress can wreak havoc on your hormones and immune system. Incorporate things such as yoga, meditation, mindful breathing into your habits to reduce stress.

After I was diagnosed with PCOS I realized that I wasn’t taking care of myself properly.  So I established a self-care routine to help me manage my PCOS symptoms.  I started with small things such as taking time to decompress after work, get my nails done, taking detox baths and taking naps.  It requires preparation and planning, but it is completely worth it.  Proper self-care will help you tremendously with managing your PCOS. Below are a few of my favorite self-care items.

  • Coloring Book & Colored Pencils - this is what I use to relax when I need a moment to decompress.

  • Journal: 52 List of Happiness - I love this prompted journal to reflect and appreciate my moments of happiness and gratitude.

  • Devotion: 31 Days of Prayer During Infertility - this devotion has helped me during my infertility journey. It gives you guidance and scriptures of encouragement.

  • Epsom Salt - I take a detox bath once a week to just relax. It just feels nice.

  • Sleep mask - I sleep with the television on, its a terrible habit.  But I’ve been doing it for years and this sleep mask has helped me get some good quality rest.

  • Tongue Scraper - This pulls out bacteria, decrease bad breath and even helps improve your sense of taste.

  • Dry Brush - Dry brushing prior to the shower helps improve circulation, refresh your nervous symptom and reduce cellulite.

  • Planner - helps you keep track and stay on top of your meal plans, day to day activities, and even track your habits. If it’s cute it makes you want to use it more.

I want to challenge you to find the time to figure out what self-care looks like to you.  Find the activities that make you happy and implement the habits that help you be your best self;  physically, mentally and spiritually. It will be worth it, I promise.
